Who was Guru Nanak Dev ji’s guru? – Part I

Who was Guru Nanak Dev ji’s guru? – Part I

guru eIsru guru gorKu brmw guru pwrbqI mweI ]

See above what is written, you Khalistani Terrorists. It is Japji Sahib and Guru Nanak Dev ji is saying that his guru is Shivji, Brahma and Vishnu. Take that. How will you say Sikhs don’t worship deities? Huh!
If you have heard the above lines or one of them on some website and you believe in that, then you have been brainwashed without you knowing it. Your power to think has been taken away from you and now you are controlled by the lunatics who have nothing else in their lives to do but spread false information about Sikhs on the social media.
The very common misleading part is that if you don’t agree with some lunatics they will label you ‘Khalistani Terrorists.’ The harmful effect that it has changes the minds of people. They will not talk about the lines before and after that to hide the true meaning. In the earlier articles too, we’ve discussed that. One example that I want to give here is from Bhagat Kabir ji’s bani before explaining the true meaning of the verse.

kbIr bwmnu gurU hY jgq kw
Kabir, brahmin is the guru of the world.

Many of you might have read/heard the above verse. If I’m a man working for some agencies who have hired the Sikh-looking people to do their dirty job, I will say ‘see, in Guru Granth Sahib ji it’s written that brahmin is the guru of the world, then why we say Guru Granth Sahib ji is our guru?’ A person who doesn’t know about gurbani might be confused. He might even agree with me. But a Singh who is well-read will laugh at me and correct me.
How?
The above verse of Bhagat Kabir ji is one part of the line, and other part is not mentioned so that only the misleading meaning will be talked about; many times, it’s the main reason behind the misinterpretation of gurbani. Now think of a person who will copy the above verse from this blog and start promulgating that Sikhs’ guru is a brahmin as mentioned in gurbani!
Following is the complete verse.

kbIr bwmnu gurU hY jgq kw Bgqn kw guru nwih ]
AriJ auriJ kY pic mUAw cwrau bydhu mwih ]237]

Kabeer, the Brahmin may be the guru of the world, but he is
not the Guru of the devotees.
He (brahmin) rots and dies in the perplexities of the four Vedas.

This is the complete verse and clears the message.
In one of the articles of Ajit Vadakayil – a dilettante – he said that Bhagat Kabir ji never existed. It was just a clever thinking of the British that created a false man and then added the verses in Guru Granth Sahib ji. I thought about it for some time that why he would say something that meaningless. And the answer came automatically. Simple. Because Bhagat Kabir ji was a devotee who shattered the core beliefs of Hindus, from deities to the superstitions. He didn’t believe in all the basic things that Hindus do. He even did the same with Muslims.
How many Hindus who love their tradition will say that all the verses of Kabir ji are correct? None. However, some of the Hindus believe in Kabir ji so much and the reason being that they don’t follow the old tradition of Hinduism that Kabir ji didn’t agree with. So what to do now? Just say he never existed. Easy to do that. In the foreign countries, I’ve heard some people say there’s no evidence of the existence of Jesus Christ. What reason those foreigners has I really don’t know. But Ajit Vadakayil copied that disregard of Bhagat Kabir ji’s existence from them.
In the near future, he will definitely say Bhagat Namdev ji also never existed but created by the British. He might not have read the bani of Bhagat Namdev ji, otherwise he would have mentioned that already. And all the people who go to his blog every day to get the knowledge are either living in the Stone Age or are idiots who never read any books in a library to know how deception works.
Coming back to the topic. Japji Sahib is a conversation between Sidhs and Guru Nanak Dev ji. We are trying to write the meaning of Japji Sahib in English and will be available on this blog soon. The verse that is mentioned at the beginning is in the fifth pauri of Japji Sahib. Here is the complete pauri:

QwipAw n jwie kIqw n hoie ] Awpy Awip inrMjnu soie ]
ijin syivAw iqin pwieAw mwnu ] nwnk gwvIAY guxI inDwnu ]
gwvIAY suxIAY min rKIAY Bwau ] duKu prhir suKu Gir lY jwie ]
gurmuiK nwdM gurmuiK vydM gurmuiK rihAw smweI ]
guru eIsru guru gorKu brmw guru pwrbqI mweI ]
jy hau jwxw AwKw nwhI khxw kQnu n jweI ]
gurw iek dyih buJweI ] sBnw jIAw kw ieku dwqw so mY ivsir n jweI ]5]

While talking about Waheguru, Sidhs asked Guru Nanak Dev ji, was Waheguru established by someone? Is He in Maaya like we all are? Was there some other God before Waheguru? Does He have any parents? Is He following the commands of someone?
QwipAw n jwie – Waheguru is not (like kings who were given the throne by their fathers or fought for it) established by anyone.
kIqw n hoie – Waheguru is not created (like the humans are born, with eggs and sperms. That’s one of the ways of the life that exists on this planet. Waheguru doesn’t have any mother who would have conceived Him.)
Awpy Awip – He is of Himself (He is not under anyone. He doesn’t follow any commands of someone above Him.)
inrMjnu soie – Waheguru is not influenced by maaya.
ijin syivAw iqin pwieAw mwnu ] – Those who serve Him are adored (in this life and afterlife.)
nwnk gwvIAY guxI inDwnu ] – Guru Nanak Dev ji said sing the praise of Him who has everything ( in the main translation that people usually read is said ‘the Treasure of Excellence’)
Next the Sidhs asked what the way is to sing His praises. Guru Nanak Dev ji answered:
gwvIAY suxIAY min rKIAY Bwau ] – When you sing His praises, trust Him and then your heart will be filled with parkash. Sing His praises, also listen too (your mind shouldn’t wander in the worldly matters but focused in what you are listening), believe in Him and have love in your mind while listening.
Sidhs asked what we would get if we do that.
duKu prhir suKu Gir lY jwie ] – Your worries (of dying and then coming back to this world, reincarnation, or worldly worries) would go away and liberation-like peace you will have in the Heaven.
Sidhs asked how to sing His praises.
gurmuiK nwdM – Through Guru’s words/instructions His praises are sung.
Sidhs said the Vedas also give the instructions.
gurmuiK vydM gurmuiK rihAw smweI ] – Guru’s words are the Vedas (means that what the Guru is saying is the wisdom. Sikhs read other religions’ books too but they don’t revere them as they do for gurbani, but it doesn’t mean that they talk wrongly about the scriptures. Sometimes the examples are to be given for the references that came in gurbani, especially that the Vedas are in maaya, not above that.)
The second translation of the last line is also as follows. Gurmukh (a Sikh), he does kirtan to keep his mind drenched in the naam. He also does the discourse of the shabad of Guru Sahib. And when he’s done with that, he does the contemplation of his own self, the jot of Waheguru.
(Now comes the line that people talk about by beating their chests without any understanding of gurbani.)
Sidhs asked how He is.
guru eIsru guru gorKu brmw guru pwrbqI mweI ] – He is Guru of Shivji. He is Guru of Vishnu. He is Guru of Brahma. He is Guru of Parbhabi, Shivji’s power. He is Guru of Lakshmi, power of Vishnu. He is Guru of Sraswati, power of Brahma.
Sidhs asked, do you not believe in the three main deities and their powers?
guru eIsru guru gorKu brmw guru pwrbqI mweI ] – Guru Sahib said Guru (Waheguru) is like Vishnu – Waheguru nurtures the selfless acts of Sikhs in their hearts. Guru is like Shivji – Waheguru destroys the bad habits of Sikhs. Guru is like Brahma – Waheguru gives the beautiful habits to Sikhs. Guru is like Parbati – Waheguru keeps the trusts of Sikhs. Guru is like Lakshmi – Waheguru gives the Four Priceless Things. Guru is like Sraswati – Waheguru gives brahmgyaan to Sikhs.
These are the actual meaning of the line that some people have been using for years. If you see the literal translation of the words, then it will be same as it’s mentioned in the English translation by Sant Singh Khalsa: The Guru is Shiva, the Guru is Vishnu and Brahma; the Guru is Paarvati and Lakhshmi. One word that was missed was Sraswati. If you read in the puratan sampardaas, they will divide maayi (mweI) in two words: Lakshmi and Sraswati.
If I have already made my mind that Sikh Gurus worship the Hindu deities I will read the verse ‘The Guru is Shiva’ as Shiva is the Guru, but the meaning is directly opposite to that; my Guru is my Shiva, not Shiva, a deity, my Guru. Well that is being said, the continuation of this pauri will give us more on that if Guru Sahib said that the three deities and their wives/powers he worshipped or not.
Sidhs asked Guru Sahib to tell more about Him.
jy hau jwxw AwKw nwhI khxw kQnu n jweI ] – (Although with my understanding) I can tell more of Him, but all of that can’t be described in words.
They asked to give them advice.
gurw iek dyih buJweI ] – Waheguru has given me this one understanding.
sBnw jIAw kw ieku dwqw so mY ivsir n jweI ]5] – Waheguru is the only One and only Giver, may I never forget Him.
Read the highlighted line thrice so that it can be understood. There is only One. Then how would Shivji, Brahma or Vishnu be Guru Sahib’s guru? Or you didn’t go further but started reading that one line and finished your reading and concluded everything? That will not make you a very intelligent person. The ephemeral theories and sticking lies to the lives of Sikh Gurus or Sikhs will not take your anywhere.
Stop spreading lies!
